A pristine slice of the Indian Ocean, Mafia Island offers world-class diving, whale shark encounters, and an untouched tropical escape — far from the crowds of Zanzibar.
Covering approximately 394 km², Mafia Island is part of Tanzania's southern Spice Islands and home to one of East Africa's most protected marine environments. Lush coastal forests, coral-fringed bays, and traditional fishing villages define the landscape. Unlike its busier neighbours, Mafia remains quiet, unhurried, and deeply connected to the sea.
The best time to visit. Calm seas, excellent diving visibility, and reliable sunshine. Ideal for snorkeling, reef diving, and boat excursions. Water temperatures sit comfortably at 26–28 °C. Peak whale shark season begins from October.
The prime window for whale shark sightings, with peak aggregations around October and November. Short rains fall in November. Seas remain largely navigable. Temperatures range from 27–32 °C. Fewer visitors, quieter atmosphere.
Heavy monsoon rains make sea crossings difficult. Many lodges close during April and May. Not recommended for travel. Some operators offer reduced rates for adventurous visitors who come in March before the rains peak.
